This paper examines older beliefs into present day one's.

"Greater Than the Struggle Between Men" examines the rhetorical choices of William Faulkner during his Noble Prize acceptance speech. Faulkner explains to his audience the inner struggle a man faces is more important than any squabble between men.

During the time of this speech, anxieties are high with the world looming on a possible World War III. Faulkner challenges writers to step back from those fears and instead focus on the heart of the problem. Most traumatic events and feelings occur from a issue within ourselves.  If writers can help people overcome their own struggles then people's interactions with others will also improve.

This speech is powerful because it recognizes the influence of words while persuading writers themselves.  Faulkner, a Noble Prize winner for writing, captures this idea elegantly.
